With this in mind, when you let your car idle, you use more fuel with little or no benefit. After all, your car’s engine has been optimized to run at low temperatures without the car stalling. The only reason to stop your car is to warm up the cabin and defrost the windshield, which should take about 3 minutes.
If you keep your vehicle idling for 10 to 15 minutes before starting your journey, it will increase the pollution. With much of the fuel leaving the engine unburned or partially burned, your car will release a lot of toxic fumes.


Why do many people think that warming up the car at idle in the winter is paramount?
Internal combustion engines work by mixing gasoline with air in the engine’s cylinders. Once the air-fuel mixture is compressed, the mixture is ignited by the spark plug, which moves the pistons. In years past, especially before the 1980s, a carburetor controlled the mixture of fuel and air. A disadvantage of the carburetor was its inability to precisely control the fuel in the air-fuel mixture.
Since gasoline has a hard time evaporating in cold weather, the carburettor was liable to release much more fuel than necessary.
The rich fuel mixture increased the potential for engine damage once ignited.
Car owners are advised to let their car idle for a few minutes to allow the engine to warm up and therefore make it easier to feed the carburettor with the right fuel mixture.
When do you need repairs?
The mechanical parts of the alternator are sealed, but standing water can damage it as the lubricant wears out. Repeated exposure to water can cause damage to the brushes due to arcing and wear. Early detection is always better. Check the signals on the dashboard while driving, if the ignition is on, it will show a battery light on the car dashboard. This means you need to look at it quickly.
